High risk medical insurance: what is it good for?
People who have serious medical conditions are of often the candidates for rejection every time they apply for any form of medical insurance. This is especially true in most states where high risk individuals are usually considered uninsurable. However, other states offer high risk medical insurance pools specifically for these persons who are always finding it hard to get health insurance coverage because of their medical condition.
High risk medical insurance pools are specialized self – funded insurance plans that are organized by the state. Some of these function as part of the state’s insurance department while some are independent of the state. However, all of them offer basically the same kind of insurance plans which can be applied to using either an insurance agent or by the high risk – individuals themselves. Then like any other health plan, they can choose from a set of health options and receive enrollment cards as well as information on the insurance plan.
However, unlike other kinds of health plan, a high risk medical insurance plan often includes its own limitations. Also this is often offered in a group basis because it lessens the total costs that are incurred especially if some members are in need of more extreme care which is generally costly and expensive. This group basis also lessens the risks for the plan to be denied as well as lower the premiums that needs to be paid. However, it may offer lesser benefits and lesser flexibility of coverage as opposed high risk plans that are offered individually.
